Weather Warnings Go Up In Tampa Bay Area

The National Weather Service is warning of the potential for storms, isolated tornadoes and hazardous conditions on local waters.

TAMPA, FL — The Tampa Bay area’s streak of sunny days is coming to an end with the arrival of a low-pressure system Wednesday. That system, forecasters at the National Weather Service warn, is expected to bring strong winds, thunderstorms and the potential for tornadoes along with it.

In advance of anticipated deteriorating conditions, the weather service has issued several advisories for local waters. Swimmers are warned that rip currents are likely along area beaches until about 1 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16. Those who do venture into local waters are warned to heed life guard advice and keep a look out for flags and warning signs.

Boaters are also being warned that winds speeds of up to 25 knots are likely throughout the day on Wednesday. With that in mind, the service is warning small craft operators that conditions could become hazardous for them.

Landlubbers are being advised to keep an eye on the sky, as well. Storms that move through the region Wednesday have the potential to bring strong winds, locally heavy rains, hail, frequent lightning strikes and isolated tornadoes along with them, forecasters warned in Wednesday’s Hazardous Weather Outlook report. Rain chances are highest heading into the late morning and afternoon hours, but do stick around into the evening, as well. The day’s high should only reach the mid- to upper 70s in much of the region. The overnight low is anticipated to fall into the upper 50s.

While stormy weather is in the cards Wednesday, a return of sunshine is expected Thursday. Forecasters say the day could be a little chilly though with a high only in the upper 60s forecast. A mostly clear, but brisk evening is likely Thursday with a low in the upper 40s anticipated.
