Suspect Named In Fatal Shooting, Wanted For 1st Degree Murder

The suspect is considered armed and dangerous, authorities said. He is possibly still in the St. Pete area.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A 31-year-old man is wanted for murder of a victim and the attempted murder of another man, St. Petersburg police said.

The suspect, Cornelius "Cornbread" Trevion Whitfield is accused of killing Darren Barnes, Jr., 31, Tuesday at Emerald Pointe Apartments. Another man experienced serious injuries during the incident, authorities said.

Whitfield is considered armed and dangerous, detectives said. He is 5-feet-6 and weighs 145 pounds. A tattoo is on his neck. Investigators believe he may still be in the St. Pete area.

One man was killed early Tuesday morning and another man was injured in a double shooting that took place at Emerald Pointe Apartments in St. Petersburg, a police news release said.

One man was dead inside the apartment, 175 73rd Avenue North, and the other victim was taken to a hospital as a trauma alert, St. Pete police said.
