10,000 Sandbags and Counting: A City Battens Down
The wait was 45 minutes or more for DIY sandbags in St. Petersburg Sunday, as skies darkened and Isaac continued on its destructive path.
The city of St. Petersburg was handing out free sandbags to residents Saturday and Sunday, drawing long lines of people preparing for Isaac's arrival to the Tampa Bay area.
At Northeast Park on 62nd Avenue, the line of cars extended for a half-mile, as folks waited to lead vehicles with free sandbags. It was a DIY operation, with teens from TASCO helping out.
On Saturday, city workers handed out 10,000 sandbags – filled with 12 truckloads of sand. By midday Sunday, folks had used up four truckloads of sand, with people lining up for their free 20 bags, which were then lugged into cars.

At the Frank Pierce Rec Center on 7th Street South also had an assembly line for filling and handing out sandbags to residents.
