Electric Golf Cart Catches Fire While Charging At St. Pete Home: SPFR

The electric golf cart was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters responded to the home, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — An electric golf cart caught fire while plugged in and charging in the driveway of a St. Petersburg home Saturday afternoon, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue wrote in a Facebook post.

When firefighters responded to the home, the golf cart was fully engulfed in flames.

Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames before they could spread to the house, which was just four feet away, SPFR wrote.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the agency warns residents about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in golf carts and e-bikes.

“These batteries can pose serious fire hazards, especially if damaged, overcharged or exposed to extreme temperatures,” the agency wrote.
