ST. PETERSBURG, FL — As spring break nears, locals and vacationers might be looking for "crowd-free" ways to have fun while relaxing or vacationing.

One way to skip the spring break crowds is by renting a boat with or without a captain through the GetMyBoat app.

This app connects you with local boat or jet ski rentals in St. Petersburg. If you happen to be a responsible boat owner and meet the company's requirements, you can sign up on the website and make extra cash by giving boat tours. The company said the app is starting to see a lot of requests in the St. Petersburg area.

Users can browse available boats and check reviews of past users on the app. A GetMyBoat spokesperson said it also gives price comparisons, and provides a secure payment process. Boats can be reserved from an hour to the majority of the day. Some bigger boats allow you to stay onboard for a couple of days.

Some people book a boat for gender reveal parties, bachelor and bachelorette parties, sight-seeing, micro-weddings and birthday parties. The boats are regularly cleaned and sanitized, a spokesperson said. Captains have been booking their boats at below normal maximum capacity to enable for more spacing and distancing while onboard, according to the company. Everyone on the boat is also encouraged to wear masks when in closer contact, or during close contact operating procedures.

If you're wondering about the boat owners qualifications and onboard safety precautions, the GetMyBoat terms of service requires that all boat owners, charter companies, and captains abide by the laws and regulations set forth by their locale.

For boat owners who are looking to get into chartering your boats, the Coast Guard Auxiliary will perform a free inspection of your boats. Boat operators on GetMyBoat receive inquiries from prospective renters that list their desired date and time, how many people, and other details, the company said. From there, the owner can make an offer for the renter to accept and pay to confirm the booking.
