Highest Gas Prices In FL Since 2014: AAA

Many drivers are seeing prices above $3 at the pump as high prices for crude oil remain. The aftermath of Ida has caused a fuel shortage.

FLORIDA — Drivers throughout Florida are paying some of the most expensive prices at the gas pump since October 2014, according to AAA.

Fuel supplies are running low as a result of Hurricane Ida's effects on the Gulf Coast. The pandemic is partly to blame as well. When the pandemic struck, global and American crude producers let off the throttle, according to Mark Jenkins, AAA spokesperson. U.S. crude production rates dropped as much as 25 percent in 2020. About half of that had returned before Hurricane Ida struck the Gulf Coast. Three weeks ago, US crude oil production rates dropped another 13 percent after Hurricane Ida temporarily shutdown oil refineries and offshore rigs.

Florida gas prices have slowly declined the past 10 consecutive days. The state average is now $3.07 per gallon, after dropping three cents last week from the 2021 high of $3.10 per gallon.

"Although gasoline prices normally decline in the fall, they remain elevated due to the high price of crude and lower fuel supplies both domestically and around the world," Jenkins said.
