FLORIDA — Millions of Floridians in several counties have been ordered to evacuate their homes ahead of Hurricane Ian, which is expected to directly hit cities on the state's western coast as a powerful Category 4 storm.

"All information tells us this is very serious," Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said Monday. "A mandatory evacuation will come and, when it does, our first responders will be taken off the streets. This is the real deal. If you don't evacuate, you're on your own. No one's going to come to rescue you."

As of the 8 a.m. update Wednesday, Ian’s eye is expected to make landfall between Venice and Fort Myers, causing a storm surge of up to 16 feet, the National Hurricane Center warned. NOAA reported the storm is intensifying, with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph.
