Isaac Sandbags St. Petersburg: Coastal Storm Photos

With 50,000 people flooding into the Tampa Bay area for the 2012 Republican National Convention, there was a round-the-clock vigil for a storm that did not arrive.

Isaac did not huff or puff but only gave the Tampa Bay region a good drenching, as it traveled over the Gulf of Mexico toward Louisiana Monday.

No, this was not the Cat 1 or Cat 2 hurricane some expected for southwest Florida. This was a mouse – a mouse that roared. The storm, or the threat of it, canceled classes, closed courthouses and delayed the start of the Republican National Convention.

But Isaac defied the computer models and kept its distance. By Monday afternoon, Pinellas County's three shelters closed 24 hours after they opened. The biggest risks were coastal riptides, as the storm churned out to sea, its bands of rain heralding some relief from a scorched August day in Florida.
