Suspect Crashes At Least Two Vehicles, A Boat And Trailer In Crime Spree

A suspect who started a string of illegal activity in Clearwater early Saturday continued into St. Pete with carjacking and home invasion.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A good Samaritan's car was stolen early Saturday morning after he pulled over on Park Street North to check on the suspect who had just wrecked his car, St. Petersburg Police said.

The 32-year-old man, Jamie David Smith, who is accused of the carjacking had crashed a vehicle into a sign of Park Street Baptist Church, 3901 Park Street North, St. Petersburg, investigators said. After the good Samaritan who had a boat and trailer in tow pulled over to check on him, Smith took off in his car. Eventually, the suspect lost control of the car causing the boat and trailer detach. He then swerved into oncoming traffic, according to detectives.

Smith then tried to carjack another vehicle but was unsuccessful, police said. He ran away and knocked on the door of a random house in the 5200 block of Dartmouth Avenue North, and forced his way inside. Law enforcement was able to get him to surrender. The homeowner was uninjured.
