Pinellas Trail to Connect to Treasure Island

The Pinellas Trial will soon be have a Treasure Island connection.

On Thursday, the St. Petersburg City Council approved a $153,000 contract to design the trail that would connect downtown St. Petersburg to the Gulf of Mexico.

According to St. Petersburg documents, the proposed project would connect to the existing Pinellas Trail at 2nd Avenue North, east of 72nd Street. The trail will then continue west along the south side of 2nd Avenue North toward 72nd Street. Moving along the trail, it will connect with the existing facility located on the bridge east of Sunset Drive.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the project will be done within two years. 

"It will provide residents of St. Petersburg and lower Pinellas County access to our beaches," said Joe Kubicki, the city's director of transportation and parking management, according to the Times.

The project, according to city documents, will include signage pavement markings to route cyclists along Causeway Boulevard North and Treasure Island Causeway, connecting to the bicycle facilities in Treasure Island. 

The scope of the work include survey, design, permitting and preparation of bid document for approximately 2,900 linear feet of new 10 to 12 food wide off-road multiuse trail and 6,900 linear feet of new bicycle route facilities, connecting the Pinellas trail at 2nd Avenue North near 72nd Street to the Pinellas County Beach at Gulf Boulevard and 104th Avenue in Treasure Island.
