Man Accidentally Shoots, Kills Himself: St. Pete Police

A man was carrying a gun inside a bag when the firearm discharged and killed him.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A 40-year-old man who was found shot in front of Kay's Food Store on Thursday morning accidentally shot himself, according to preliminary findings.

A video showed Demond Boykins stumble and fall in the parking lot, detectives said. As he tried to stand up, his bag fell and hit the pavement. A gun was inside the bag that went off. The bullet hit Boykins in the head, according to investigators. He was taken to a local hospital where he died.

Police have begun a shooting investigation in South St. Petersburg after a man was shot early Thursday morning in front of a convenience store.

Detectives said a man was bleeding outside Kay Food Store, 1421 22nd Street South at 3:36 a.m. The victim was taken to the hospital with a life-threatening injury.
