Police: Woman Carjacked by Bank Robber in St. Pete

St. Petersburg Police are seaching for a man they believe stole a car at gunpoint and then used it to rob a bank nearby.

He is described as a man in his late teens to early 20s, 6-foot to 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, who was last seen wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and carrying a backpack.

According to police, the man approached a woman in the parking lot of Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts at 2500 66th Street North around 1:45 p.m Friday. The man showed the woman a handgun and demanded her car, police say.

The suspect took the car, a 2010 dark gray Toyota Camry four-door, and sped out of the parking lot. The woman was not injured.

About 10 minutes later, St. Petersburg Police say they recieved a bank robbery alarm at the Wells Fargo Bank at 3131 66th St. N.

Police confirmed that a lone masked male suspect entered the bank, armed with a handgun, and demanded money from the tellers, according to police spokesperson Mike Puetz.

No one was injured, but the suspect apparently left the scene in same vehicle taken from the victim in the carjacking at Jo-Ann Fabrics about 10 minutes earlier, police say.

According to police, the carjacking victim's car was recovered a few blocks from the bank, and it appears the suspect abandoned it and was either picked up or had another vehicle waiting for him.

Police are working on obtaining video from the bank.
