Rescued Loggerhead Turtle Returned to the Sea

A Loggerhead sea turtle injured in Egmont Channel was rehabilitated and released back into the wild this week, with the help of the U.S. Coast Goard and Florida Aquarium.

Crewmembers from the U.S. Coast Guard Station in St. Petersburg and experts from the Florida Aquarium partnered to return the sea turtle, named "Larry," back into the ocean.

Last June, a Coast Guard crew saw an injured turtle in the path of a boat, four miles west of Egmont Key. The turtle may have been impacted by Tropical Storm Debby.

"We saw the turtle having some issues, acting lethargic and unable to dive," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan Jones, boarding team officer during the rescue.

The turtle was treated at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa. On Monday, "Larry" was returned to the waters off the Florida coast.
