Drug Lab Causes Explosion At St. Pete Apartments: Police

A drug lab in an apartment caused an explosion that caused dozens of residents to evacuate their homes in St. Pete, authorities said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — An investigation showed the cause of a Wednesday afternoon apartment explosion in St. Petersburg was caused by a drug lab located inside a unit, St. Pete police said.

Investigators said residents who were evacuated earlier on Wednesday were allowed back inside their homes.

An explosion took place inside a St. Petersburg apartment just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, a police news release said.

The incident took place at Alta Mar at Broadwater, 3906 34th Terrace S., Apartment B, detectives said. St. Pete police evacuated the nearby 11 apartments as a precaution. The Tampa Bomb Squad will determine when it is safe for residents to return.

It is unknown as of Wed. afternoon if anyone experienced injuries from the explosion.
