Sheriff's Office Citizen Patrol Taking Applications

Citizen Patrol, SNAP Dollars Doubled, Real Hero Award, Free Museum Day and Patch Newsletters are five things you need to know today.

1. Applications are now being accepted for the next Sheriff's Citizen Patrol and
Special Events Programs academy. This volunteering opportunity gives citizens

2. Families who are looking to stretch their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program (SNAP) dollars will see their food benefits increase when downtown St.
Petersburg's Saturday Morning Market reopens for the season on Oct. 6. At the St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market, $10 in SNAP dollars will buy recipients $20 of eligible foods at vendor booths that accept SNAP and Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) tokens.

3. This Friday night at the Vinoy, 20-year-old Melissa Dohme will be awarding her trauma surgeon, Dr. Jeff Johnson, with the 2012 Real Hero Award. Johnson was in charge of Dohme's critical care when she arrived at Bayfront in January after getting stabbed in the face and neck more than 30 times by her ex-boyfriend. Dohme underwent several emergency surgical procedures and flat-lined numerous times while receiving more than 12 pints of blood. Her full recovery, Dr. Johnson has said, was "nothing short of miraculous."

4.  St. Petersburg shines the spotlight on its vibrant arts and cultural scene with a celebration of the arts featuring the annual ArtsAlive 2012 Free Museum Day on Saturday, Sept. 29. For this once-a-year event, admission is free to several museums and cultural attractions in St. Petersburg including he Dr. Carter G. Woodson Museum, Florida Holocaust Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg Museum of History, Dali Museum, Great Explorations Children's Museum, The Pier Aquarium, Creative Clay, Morean Arts Center Galleries/Glass Studio and Hot Shop, Morean Arts Center for Clay and the Chihuly Collection. Free admission to the Dali Museum will be limited to Pinellas County residents only. Free admission for the Chihuly Collection is for Florida residents only.
