Speeders Could Pay Up To $500 In St. Pete For Tickets: Police

Police with the St. Petersburg Police Traffic Unit have begun a new series that focuses on speed enforcement operations.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — After an increase in traffic deaths since 2020 throughout St. Petersburg, police are warning drivers to slow down.

St. Petersburg Police Traffic Unit began a new series Thursday that focuses on speed enforcement operations. The first one occurred on Roosevelt Boulevard near Interstate-275, officers said. Thirteen fatal traffic crashes in the city have happened so far in 2021, compared to five in 2020 during the same time frame, investigators said.

The fatalities occurred in motorcycle, vehicle and pedestrian crashes. Excessive speed and/or distracted driving played a part in most cases, St. Pete police said on their Facebook page.

Two locations will be focused on every week in St. Pete while the traffic unit monitors drivers and issues tickets to drivers who break the law. Authorities said speeding drivers could pay up to a $500 fine.
