Bomb Squad Called Out for Suspect Package at School Offices

Here is why Tarpon school officials became concerned. The high school was put on lockdown during the incident.

Tarpon Springs High School was on lockdown Tuesday afternoon, when schools officials became concerned about what they thought was a suspicious package on campus.

The Tampa Bay Regional Bomb Squad was called in, but the package was determined to be safe, "legitimate" mail.

(UPDATE)  "Once completely opened, the package contained a golden trophy with the name of an administrative office staff employee," according to a press release.

"There was no letter or any other information identifying who sent the package, and at this time there does not appear to be any criminal intent," according to the written statement.

The package was delivered by U.S. Mail to the administrative building at 1411
Gulf Rd. But it had no visible return address.

Also, unbeknownst to officials at the time, the package had been re-wrapped by the Post Office. Exposed newspaper, twine and the partially opened condition of the box caused alarm.

A school administrator took the package outside, placing it away from the building.  

The school was put on a lockdown  lockdown as a precaution and to keep individuals away from the area of the package.

Gulf Road also was shut down temporarily.
