Camerman William Welch describes himself as the "quadcopter" pilot, suggesting that he perched a camera in a drone that he made from a DIY kit. This flying camera took these breathtaking photos.
(Update: Welch affirmed in an email Thursday that "I have a quadcopter, radio controlled, that carries a video camera. Although that video is not bad, I plan on doing it again with a better stabilization system to have even better video.")

Here's what Welch wrote about his unusual bird's eye view of Tarpon Springs:
A montage of Tarpon Springs Florida showing the beauty of the Greek sponging community on the Gulf coast. Includes St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Spring Bayou, where the Epiphany Cross dive takes place, The Sponge Docks, and the fishing fleet.
Time to step up the game to a better computer as the original video is so far superior to this rendering. Windows needs to go as all my Apple Mac friends would agree I'm sure. But until then, I'll keep plugging away with this machine. The jumping skipping and jello does not appear to be in the original footage so I have to assume it is this pos laptop not able to render smoothly.
