Operation Medicine Cabinet is Active in Tarpon Springs

Residents can drop off unused and expired prescription drugs to the police department.

Since April, the Tarpon Springs Police Department has collected more than 240 pounds of unwanted and expired drugs through Operation Medicine Cabinet.

According to the Health Sciences Institute, 250 million tons of pharmaceutical waste makes its way into landfills and sewage systems each year.

To minimize the problem, local residents are being encouraged to drop off their unused, unwanted and expired medications to the Tarpon Springs Police Department, 444 South Huey Ave.

Dropping off prescription waste to local law enforcement is easy and efficient, according to Captain Jeff Young of the Tarpon Springs Police Department.

“This is a safe means in which to dispose of them properly,” Young said.
