The Spongers are one of five high school mascots in Florida and 255 from across the country in USA Today's Best Mascot competition, which launched Monday.
Anyone 13 and older can vote online in the opening round, which ends 3 p.m. March 5 with a winner from each state advancing. The contest continues through March 25, when one best mascot will be crowned.

The Sponger nickname recognizes the city's long history of sponge diving that traces back to its Greek roots.
Tarpon Springs High was established in 1905 and fielded its first Sponger football team in 1925, according to USA Today.

The Spongers' competition from Florida include the Fighting Ducks of Cornerstone Charter Academy in Orlando; the Conchs of Key West High; the Dreadnaughts from Lakeland High; and the Hoboes of Laurel Hill High.
