1 Dead, 4 Injured In Albany State Homecoming Weekend Shooting

A fifth person was injured while attempting to flee, but the GBI said the person was not shot in the fatal incident at Albany State.

ALBANY, GA — Homecoming weekend at Albany State University turned deadly Saturday when someone opened fire, killing a person and injuring four others, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Sunday.

The shooting happened around 8:45 p.m. "in a crowded area near a campus concert" during homecoming festivities, the GBI said.

Authorities identified De’Marion Tashawn Daniels, 19, of Newnan, as the person killed in the shooting. The GBI said Daniels was not a student at ASU.

A bullet grazed a 20-year-old woman, the GBI said. Additionally, the GBI said a 13-year-old Albany girl, a 17-year-old high-school female student and a 16-year-old high-school female student suffered from gunshot wounds.

A fifth person was injured while attempting to flee, but the GBI said the person was not shot.

The shooting prompted a campus lockdown at ASU while officers searched for suspects, the GBI said. No one has been arrested in the shooting, and the GBI did not identify potential suspects.

"The Albany State University family is deeply saddened to learn of an incident that took place on campus at approximately 8:50 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2024," read a statement from the university's interim president, Lawrence M. Drake II, as obtained by ABC News. "As always, the safety and security of our ASU students, faculty and staff are the number one priority of this institution."
