Funeral Details For GA Officer Who Died In Crash Released

Funeral details for the Georgia officer who suffered cardiac arrest while driving and died after a crash have been released.

JONESBORO, GA — The funeral service for a Georgia deputy who died in a crash last week will be held Friday, according to his obituary shared by the Spalding County Sheriff's Office on Monday.

Spalding County Deputy Joe Crumpton, of Fayetteville, suffered a cardiac arrest while driving and crashed his vehicle in Fayette County on Tuesday, authorities previously said. He was 62.

A Fayette County Emergency Services staffer found Crumpton's crashed vehicle around 5:15 p.m., authorities said.

Witnesses told law enforcement that Crumpton "appeared to have some type of medical event" before hitting another vehicle and leaving the roadway, Spalding County Sheriff Darrell Dix said.

Crumpton later died at Fayette Piedmont Hospital, authorities said. No one else was injured in the crash.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Divine Faith Ministries, 9800 Tara Blvd., in Jonesboro, according to his obituary.

Crumpton had been with the sheriff's office since May 2023 and was assigned as a transport officer for its detention division. He was a husband and father to seven adult children, and also had six grandchildren and one grandson, according to his obituary.

He and his wife are both Army veterans, authorities said.
