Don't Miss Lynn Cullen Discussing 'The Woman with the Cure' March 21
Seats still available Tuesday for A Novel Idea's evening with author whose new book sheds light on woman who helped end the polio pandemic

A Novel Idea will host Lynn Cullen, bestselling author of historical fiction, as she discusses her new release, “The Woman With The Cure,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, at the Alpharetta Branch Library, 10 Park Plaza, Alpharetta.
Cullen, who lives in Atlanta, is the much-honored author of “The Sisters of Summit Avenue,” “Twain’s End” and “Mrs. Poe,” which was named an NPR Great Read and an Indie Next List selection.
A master at portraying overlooked or misunderstood historical figures, many of them female, Cullen once again focuses on a woman behind a larger-than-life true story in “The Woman With The Cure.” The novel spotlights Dr. Dorothy Horstmann during the middle of the 20th century as she faces an urgent medical crisis all too familiar to contemporary readers: Stopping a pandemic. In Horstmann’s case, it was polio, which for thousands of years had killed or paralyzed countless victims, particularly children.

During the 1940s and ’50s, some of the world’s best minds were engaged in the race to find a polio vaccine. Although that would eventually be accomplished by two other renowned doctors, it was Horstmann’s groundbreaking research that helped make the cure possible.
“Everyone knows Sabin and Salk created the polio vaccine, but without the work of Dr. Dorothy Horstmann there never would have been a vaccine in the first place,” said Bonnie Garmus, bestselling author of “Lessons in Chemistry.”
