🌱 Man Re-Arrested For Hit-And-Run + City Investigating Chief Judge

Here are the top five stories in Alpharetta-Milton today:

  1. On Tuesday morning, Jun. 28, Marietta police re-arrested Santos Rosalio Vicente-Ramos and upgraded the charges against him to include first-degree vehicular homicide after Robert Morrison, a 53-year-old Marietta resident, died from his injuries on Monday afternoon, Jun. 27. On Saturday, Jun. 18, Morrison's neighbors said he was doing yard work and wearing a reflective vest when he was a victim of a hit-and-run in front of his Wright Street home. Officer Chuck McPhilamy said that 22-year-old Vicente-Ramos "admitted he'd been drinking alcohol before he hit a man on Wright Street late Saturday." (The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  2. The City of Alpharetta is launching an investigation into the ethics of Barry Zimmerman to discover the results of a previous investigation by the Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission. Zimmerman is the chief judge of Alpharetta Municipal Court and former chief judge of the Milton Municipal Court. He announced on Jun. 9 that he will retire effective Jul. 1 for "personal reasons." If Zimmerman retires on Jul. 1 and does not seek any judicial office in the future, the commission will not bring formal charges against him. (Appen Media)
  3. All charges have been dropped against Travis Moya, who was bitten by an Alpharetta police K-9 outside his home on Jul. 25, 2021. According to Alpharetta Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard, two of the Alpharetta police officers, M. Esposito and J. Frudden, "voluntarily separated from employment with the city." Drinkard also said, as of Jun. 28, the third officer involved, C. Benfield, remains an Alpharetta police officer. The lawsuit against the Alpharetta police department is still pending. (Appen Media)
  4. Jeffrey Gallups, Alpharetta-based physician and owner of a chain of Atlanta-area medical clinics, has been sentenced to 36 months in federal prison, fined $25,000, and ordered to pay more than $700,000 in restitution for making his employees order unnecessary lab tests for patients. In October he pleaded guilty to submitting fraudulent insurance claims. (The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  5. Aziz Choukri, 59 of Johns Creek, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and admitted to defrauding a 79-year-old retiree who he met at a fitness facility in Alpharetta in 2016. He defrauded approximately $650,000 from the retiree. Choukri is scheduled for sentencing on Sep. 14, 2022. (Justice Gov.)
