Here are the top five stories today in Alpharetta-Milton:

  1. Mark your calendars: early bird tickets are going fast for Taste Around Town Alpharetta! This two-day tasting event extravaganza will happen in three sessions at Union Hill Park: 7-10 p.m. Friday, Jul. 22, noon-3 p.m. Saturday, Jul. 23, and 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Jul. 23. The tickets come with bottomless wine, beer, and cocktail tastings, live music and demonstrations, as well as pairings from Alpharetta chefs — not to mention the unlimited eats!   2. Over 100 fastpitch girls’ softball teams are heading to Alpharetta in mid-July for the Triple Crown Softball Southeast Nationals' return. This four-day tournament is happening from Jul. 14 through Jul. 17 at various North Fulton sports facilities, including Alpharetta's very own North Park. The top teams from 14 different states will compete for the Southeast Nationals title. The tournament will be free for spectators. (Alpharetta-Roswell Herald)
  3. Meet Dolly and Sandy over at the Fulton County Animal Shelter! These two adorable dogs have been picked as LifeLine Animal Project's Fulton County Pets of the Week!   4. An Alpharetta-based nonprofit is putting old cell phones to good use. Cell Phones For Soldiers purchases international calling cards for military troops with the proceeds from old, donated cell phones. The goal is to give troops the chance to call home, as well as provide emergency funding to veterans. Since its creation in 2004, Cell Phones for Soldiers has provided troops with over 400 million minutes of airtime. To participate, search for a local drop-off location at www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com, or ship phones directly to the nonprofit. (The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  5. In a landmark decision yesterday, the United States Supreme Court overturned the Roe vs. Wade decision and handed the ability to decide the legality of abortion to the states. In Georgia, there's the possibility the state may ban abortions after six weeks when the fetal heartbeat is usually detected. In 2019, Gov. Brian Kemp signed the "Heartbeat Bill."   • One year ago this month, glass recycling returned to Milton. An effort sparked by then Milton High “Clean and Green Club” members Ella Katekovich and Jeslyn Guo, and spearheaded by the City, led to the placement of a tractor trailer-sized bin in Bell Memorial Park.   • The Alpharetta City Council will conduct two meetings on Monday, Jun. 27 including the City Council's next regular meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. During a recess of the regular meeting, City Council will convene in Executive Session to discuss real estate, litigation, and personnel.
