Athens Officer Nabs Burglary Suspect in the Act

Stolen instruments, jewelry and paper towels were among items found in the man's possession, police say. An arrest doesn't mean a conviction.

An Athens-Clarke County Police officer on patrol on Wednesday afternoon spotted suspicious activity at a house he knew was vacant and wound up arresting a man on a burglary charge.

According to police, the officer noticed a vehicle in the driveway of the Boley Drive residence and then saw a man exit the house carrying several items.

Paper towels, a phone base charger, pliers, a screw driver, a bass drum pedal, a record player, a turntable, a drum set, a music stand, a jewelry box, and jewelry from the residence were recovered.

Floyd Junior Johnson, 52, of Noketchee Drive, was arrested and charged with felony burglary after the officer confirmed with the property's caretakers that he was there without permission. He was being held in the jail without bond.

Officers also investigated the folllowing reports of burglaries:

  • Between 7 a.m. on Feb. 5 and 8:20 a.m. on Feb. 6, a storage shed at a Hull Road residence was burglarized. A turkey fryer, air compressor, and padlock were stolen. The total value was $360.Β 
  • Around 12:50 p.m. on Feb. 6, officers responded to an alarm at a home on Whit Davis Road. The first officer arrived within a few minutes and did not observe anyone around the residence. Although a door had been kicked in, nothing is known to be missing.
  • A neighbor reported a vacant Arch Street residence had been burglarized between midnight and 6 a.m. on Feb. 6. Clothing and a shotgun were stolen. The total value was $201.
  • A Chesterton Drive residence was burglarized between 11 a.m. and 2:05 p.m. on Feb. 6. Jewelry valued at $4,000 was stolen.
  • A burglary occurred at a Rock and Shoals Drive residence between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 6. Laptops, a camera, notebook computer, and jewelry were stolen. The total value was $2,250.Β
