6 Ways To Protect Yourself Against Porch Thieves, According To Marietta Police

The holidays are rife with incidents of packages being stolen from doorsteps. Here are a few tips for homeowners.

MARIETTA, GA -- It's that time of the year: When packages left at the front door by the UPS or FedEX driver magically disappear. Despite the holidays being a time of good cheer, there are those out there that are determined to be Grinches. The Marietta Police Department has done us all a solid and listed some good tips on how to protect items on our doorsteps.

If you can, sign for the package

One theft-proof way to ensure that your packages are opened by you and only you is if you choose the "sign for" delivery option. This essentially means that the delivery driver can't just leave the package unattended at your doorstep. Someone -- presumably you, but even someone you specifically designate -- must sign for it.

This ensures your package is not left unless you or a loved one signs for it. It prevents the delivery driver from leaving it on your doorstep for everyone to see.

Leave a note with delivery instructions

Another sound idea, is to leave a note for the delivery driver that specifically tells them where to put the package. If your porch is in a highly visible location respective to the street, you may want to instruct the driver to bring the package around back or to put it inside a fence. Thieves are less likely to venture deep onto your property, so this is a good way to hide your packages.

'Lockers' & online pick-up points

Several shops offer package pick-up points for items ordered online. The Marietta police say the city has several "Lockers" provided by stores.

Have your package delivered elsewhere

Who says your box has to come to your home address? Many people have reduced traffic in their neighborhoods by having couriers and delivery drivers bring their goods to their place of business or the local post office.

Hey neighbor, can you do me a solid?

Got a good neighbor that you trust? Have him or her receive the package in your stead. This gives you the peace of mind that your package is not just out there in front of your home unattended. This also fosters a relationship with trust with your neighbor. Isn't this what being neighborly is all about?

Store pick-up is still a thing

Yes, technology is great and all, but it's hard to beat going to the store and just picking up your package yourself. Many establishments offer online pick-up without long lines and other hassles. Take advantage.
