Food popularized by famous children's book will be served in all schools; Superintendent Meria Carstarphen will read two stories.

ATLANTA, GA -- Atlanta schools are celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday on Thursday, March 2 in style: with green eggs and ham and a reading of "Are You My Mother?” and “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!” by Superintendent Meria Carstarphen.

The event coincides with national Read Across America Day, when a slew of fun reading- and literacy-related activities are planned across U.S. schools.

To mark the occasion, green eggs and ham will be served Thursday in the cafeterias of all elementary schools in Atlanta public schools, the district said.

Dr. Seuss books were popularized by cartoonist and author Theodor Seuss Geisel, who created some of the most famous children's books of all time in the first half of the 20th century.

In addition to Deerwood, students from Hollis Innovation Academy, Beecher Hills, D.H. Stanton, Usher-Collier Heights elementary schools, Mays and Carver high schools, will join in the festivities.

The event will be 8-8:30 a.m. Deerwood Academy, 3070 Fairburn Rd, SW, Atlanta, GA 30331 and 9-9:30 a.m. Beecher Hills E.S., 2257 Boiling Brook Dr., SW, Atlanta, GA 30311.

Pupils' fathers, uncles, mentors and grandfathers are also invited to read from the books, the district said.
