Atlanta Streetcar Gets Mobile ... as in Mobile App

Now riders around downtown Atlanta can find out where the trolley is at all times.

ATLANTA, GA -- Here's your problem: You're looking to be whisked around downtown Atlanta in the trolley but can't find a ticketing station -- much less the Streetcar.

Now you can buy a ticket to the Atlanta Streetcar straight from their smartphone. You can also track the Streetcar's whereabouts in real time, thanks to a new app that the city of Atlanta announced Monday.

Of course, you can still buy tickets in cash or load MARTA Breeze Cards with Streetcar rides, but the new app allows you to buy weekly and monthly passes.

The Atlanta Streetcar services the "Downtown Loop," a 2.7 mile stretch that encompasses such landmarks as Centennial Olympic Park and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site.

The Streetcar is part of the city's transit plan to compliment the Atlanta Beltline. The Streetcar opened for business in December 2014 and has built a steady ridership since then.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said that the new app cements the Streetcar as a viable transit option for commuters.

“I am pleased that the Atlanta Streetcar is again at the cutting edge, offering the first mobile app from a transit system in the metropolitan Atlanta region,” Reed said in a statement on the Atlanta Streetcar website. “Atlanta residents have made their support for transit solutions clear. The Atlanta Streetcar is now a permanent feature of our city’s transportation system, and with innovations like the new app and expansion to more neighborhoods, the Streetcar will continue to grow in importance.”
