Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:
- The Atlanta Braves honored Andy Negra, 98, of Skylake, at the Aug. 19 game at Truist Park. Negra is a World War II veteran who served as a sergeant in the 128th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. The veteran was recognized on the field between the fourth and fifth innings of the game. (White County News)
- Kentavious Wright, 24, was charged with aggravated assault, attempted murder, and cruelty to children after being arrested for allegedly open firing on a car at a traffic light where he wounded a three-year-old in Atlanta. The Aug. 3 incident left the child with a bullet in his head, but he is expected to recover after having it removed. Wright was also charged with gang-related charges. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- Though concerns in commercial real estate have been voiced about a possible economic recession, the metro Atlanta area has 32,960 new, market-rate apartments in the pipeline. Data showed there was an 8.5 percent increase from developers in the first quarter of the year which had seemed high then with 30,363 units under construction. (Bisnow)
- According to the FBI homicide rate data from 2011 through 2020, Georgia had its deadliest year in the last decade in 2020. In 2020 alone, 943 homicides were reported accounting for 8.8 for every 100,000 people. The homicide rate for the United States in the same time frame was 6.5 for every 100,000 people. (Patch)
- A 14-year-old has died after suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on Tuesday evening. Police say the teenager was at a southeast Atlanta shopping center when he was shot. The victim's identity had not been released as of Wednesday evening and neither had possible suspects in the shooting. (WSB Atlanta)
