100 Million Mile High Club: Hartsfield Looks To Break Flier Record

Officials expect 100 million travelers for the second straight year.

ATLANTA, GA -- With the holiday travel season in full gear, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International looks to pad its lead as the world's busiest airport in the days ahead with an unprecedented feat: The airport looks to register 100 million travelers for the second straight year.

No other airport has had that many fliers pass through its doors in a calendar year even once. Hartsfield-Jackson looks to achieve the distinction in consecutive years, and even break the 2015 mark, the airport said recently.

Atlanta officials hope to surpass the milestone sometime next week.

"If projections hold true, ATL is expected to surpass 2015's single-year total of 101.4 million passengers," the airport said in a news release. "Projected traffic numbers have determined that Friday, Dec. 23, Friday Dec. 30, Monday Jan. 2 and Thursday Jan. 5 to be among the busiest travel days in the holiday season."

The airport expects more than 4.2 million travelers during the holidays and has eased construction work around the terminals in anticipation of heavy traffic.
