Here are the top five stories in Atlanta today:

  1. As of Friday afternoon, Atlanta is expected to see minimal impact from Hurricane Ian's second landfall. The reenergized Category 1 hurricane has tracked further to the east, sparing the Georgia coast from a direct hit. Residents can expect a passing shower and windy conditions over the weekend. (Reporter Newspaper)
  2. This weekend, Atlanta's Nigerian community will celebrate Nigeria's Independence Day with a series of events. Today (Saturday, Oct. 1) will begin with an appreciation walk, kicking off at 8:30 a.m. at Atlanta City Hall and ending at Grady Hospital. Tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 2), the Millenium Gate Museum will host a Nigerian culture and business fair from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. (GlobalAtlanta)
  3. Atlanta has topped Money's list of the 50 Best Places to Live in the U.S. for 2022-2023. The city's global food and music scene, historical relevance, and educational and recreational opportunities helped it nab the No. 1 spot. In its ranking, Money also added that Atlanta is "a city where anyone can feel like they belong." (Reporter Newspapers)
  4. A local tax preparer has been sentenced to over a year in prison for defrauding the IRS, according to court documents. 48-year-old Kyle Self, who ran DeKalb Tax Service LLC (also known as Tax Shield and Instant Tax), filed a series of fraudulent returns between 2015 and 2018. Officials say Self defrauded the IRS out of over $428,000 in total. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  5. Two people have died after being ejected from a vehicle during a chase with the Georgia State Patrol. Early Friday morning, a trooper attempted to stop a Jeep on I-85 at Cleveland Avenue. The driver led the trooper on a chase along I-75 and exited on I-20, where the trooper is said to have performed a PIT maneuver to stop the moving vehicle. The two people in the Jeep were ejected and, despite life-saving measures, were both pronounced dead at the scene. (11Alive.com WXIA)
