Former Labor Secretary Tom Perez made history in Atlanta over the weekend, becoming the first Latino elected as DNC chair.

ATLANTA, GA -- The Democratic National Committee made history over the weekend in Atlanta by electing former Obama administration Labor Secretary Tom Perez, the first-ever Latino to serve in the position.

Hundreds convened in the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel on Saturday to pick a new leader to take on President Donald Trump and the Republican establishment. (For more information on this and other political stories, subscribe to the White House Patch for daily newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

"What unites our party is a belief in opportunity – the idea that however you started out, whatever you look like, or whomever you love, America is the place where you can make it if you try," former President Obama said in a congratulatory speech to Perez. "I know that Tom Perez will unite us under that banner of opportunity, and lay the groundwork for a new generation of Democratic leadership for this big, bold, inclusive, dynamic America we love so much."

President Trump tweeted congratulations to Perez, although it was taken as tongue in cheek by the new DNC chair.

Perez immediately shot back on Twitter, saying that he and Democrats plan to be his "worst nightmare."

A day later, Trump still wasn't finished with Perez, saying that the DNC vote was "rigged."

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who backed Ellison, told Perez that he was hopeful about his win, because the "same-old, same-old" was not working.
