National GOP Attacks Stacey Abrams Before SOTU Rebuttal

Abrams, who lost Georgia's gubernatorial election, will deliver the Democrat response to Tuesday night's State of the Union address.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Hours before President Donald Trump delivers his state of the union address to Congress and the nation, members of the national GOP distributed a video attacking Democrat Stacey Abrams, who will deliver her party's response to the speech immediately afterward.

Abrams gained national attention last year when she sought to become the nation's first African-American female governor in history. Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp both ran in the nation's most watched governor's race, a race that Abrams narrowly lost.

On Tuesday afternoon, the National Senate Republican Committee released a video entitled "What Stacey Abrams Stands For In Less Than 30 Seconds." The committee also began using the hashtag #SourGrapesStacey on social media.

Last week, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer confirmed to Capitol Hill reporters that Abrams had been tasked with delivering the opposing party's traditional response to the state of the union address.

Despite her loss, Abrams has said she will run for office again, and speculation abounds as to whether she will challenge U.S. Sen. David Perdue in 2020 or challenge Kemp for governor in 2022.

Georgia's gubernatorial election was marred by accusations of voter fraud and election mismanagement from both parties. Kemp argued that Abrams was attempting to secure the votes of improperly registered voters, while Abrams said Kemp was trying to suppress the minority vote.
