'Sweet Auburn Ballroom' Project to Bring Concert Venue Downtown
$1M grant will help transform the former Butler Street YMCA into entertainment space.
ATLANTA, GA -- Downtown Atlanta is set to get a 12,00-capacity live music venue in the Sweet Auburn district, Patch has learned.
A $1 million grant, the first from Invest Atlanta’s recently formed Resurgens Fund, was approved last week for the project, which will be operated by venue promoter Live Nation.
The new entertainment space will have a mission of supporting up and coming artists, Invest Atlanta said in a fact sheet obtained by Patch.

The "Sweet Auburn Ballroom," as the project is called, is phase 1 in the Butler Street Community Development Corp's plan to revitalize the area along Jesse Hill Drive.
“This is a transformative project for the historic Sweet Auburn neighborhood, and will attract visitors to the area for years to come” Dawn Luke, Invest Atlanta’s Senior Vice President, said on the organization's website.

The 19,340-square-foot building is well-known among Atlanta's old guard. It was the Butler Street YMCA building.
The Resurgens Fund focuses on gap financing in the Eastside TAD (Tax Allocation District), which includes Old Fourth Ward, Grant Park and other areas of the city.
