APS Sale of Atlanta International School Building May Not Happen

The $6 million sale of the former North Fulton High facility to Atlanta International School, the school currently leasing the facility, may now be unlikely.

Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education Chairman Reuben McDaniel said Tuesday that the potential needs for the school in the future and the surrounding area’s high property values are variables that are being considered at this time, according to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The district can sell at least $2.7 million in other property next year, McDaniel said, and use more of its diminishing reserve funds if too few properties are sold.

Currently, AIS school leases the former North Fulton High build from APS for $225,000 a year and the current lease will expire in 2051. The purchase would cost the school $6.15 million and would help close the district's $61 million shortfall for the upcoming school year.

One of the most vocal opponents of the sale has been attorney Tom Tidwell, who just announced his run for McDaniel's seat as Board Chairman.
