Architects Document Randolph-Lucas Mansion on Monday

If you passed the historic Randolph-Lucas Mansion on Monday, you saw several people buzzing about the home dwarfed by the yellow condos behind it.

The Buckhead Heritage Society has offered the home, built in 1924, for free to anyone willing to pay the costs to move the home, which initially was estimated to cost $350,000.

The 2500 Peachtree Condominium Association had planned to demolish the mansion, which sits on their property, because they said the building was unsafe. However, a building inspection deemed the house structurally sound.

Several of the people at the Randolph-Lucas House in their hard hats and with their measuring tape Monday were architects documenting the home for archival purposes, Erica Danylchak of the Buckhead Heritage Society told Buckhead Patch as she herself donned a white hard hat.

They also assessed the costs of moving and rehabilitating the structure. Danylchak said the $350,000 figure given as the moving cost is really just "a very ballpark figure."

The location to which the building is being moved will have the greatest impact on cost, she said.

The clock is ticking for BHS to find someone to move the house before it will be demolished. The organization signed a 120-day reprieve with the condo association on Oct. 23 to prevent the demolition of the 1920s-era home during that period.
