Argument Over Parking Space Leads to Murder

Winfrey was shot and killed on November 2, 2012 inside of the South Gordon Street rooming house in Southwest Atlanta he shared with the defendant. The two men, who lived in separate apartments on the property, had been engaged in an on-going argument about the use of a shared driveway.

On the day of the incident, the argument escalated, prompting Cook to retrieve a gun from his home. He fired two shots, striking the victim twice in the back. When the victim fell to the ground, Cook stood over the wounded man and shot him once more in the back of the leg and fled the scene. Winfrey was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

Cook, of Atlanta, was later arrested without incident. Following his conviction, he was sentenced to life without parole by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Alford Dempsey who presided over the case.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Yolanda Mack prosecuted the case with assistance from ADA Lauren McCauley and DA Investigator Vance Williams. Detective M. Willis of the Atlanta Police Department led the initial investigation.
