Atlanta Firefighter Hit, Killed in New Orleans Bike Accident

A nine-year veteran of the Atlanta Fire Department was killed Friday morning after a vehicle struck him as he rode his bicycle in New Orleans.

Sgt. Frank Guinn was training for Sunday’s Ochsner IRONMAN 70.3 New Orleans when a car rear-ended him and two other cyclists he was riding with including his brother-in-law, who was critically injured.

Guinn, 36, who died at the scene of the accident, is survived by a wife and three triplet daughters, aged 7.

The third cyclist was not injured. The driver of the car stopped at the scene of the wreck, which occurred around 11:30 a.m. in the 20000 block of Chef Menteur Highway in New Orleans East.

The Times-Picayune reports the accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed as of Saturday morning.

Guinn was stationed at Fire Station 21, located in the heart of Buckhead on Roswell Road.

"Sergeant Guinn's brothers and sisters in Atlanta Fire Rescue are devastated at this news," Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran said in a statement emailed to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "He was a dedicated professional devoted to his family."
