ATLANTA — A car break-in and shoot-out Friday in Buckhead ended with both suspects being shot and one killed by the vehicle’s owner, police said.

“It appears that this was a group of people who decided to come out and commit crime, and unfortunately, it led to death for someone,” Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Tim Peek told reporters Friday.

One teen, 19-year-old Dontavious Cobb, was shot dead, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Another teen, 17-year-old Coby Senior, was injured and has been arrested on a number of charges, including felony murder — committing a felony that leads to a person’s death — in connection with the killing of the individual police say was his accomplice.

Around 4 p.m., Friday, police arrived in response to the report of a person shot in the parking lot of the Peachtree Battle strip mall in the 2300 block of Peachtree Road.

According to police, a man emerged from a store to find someone breaking into his vehicle and stealing items.

“That victim confronted the subject, and during that confrontation, it escalated to the point where the victim chose to take his weapon and defend himself against the people who were breaking into his vehicle,” Peek said.

While one suspect was killed at the scene, the second suspect tried to escape.

“We believe that the person deceased on scene and the second person were together,” Peek said. “At the onset of the gunfire, (Senior) began to run firing a weapon as well.”

Officers were able to quickly set up a perimeter and eventually found Senior with a gunshot wound to his wrist, Peek said. Senior was taken into custody without incident and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries.

No other charges were filed in the case, as of Friday, police said.

In addition to felony murder charges, Senior has been charged with entering an auto, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a person under 18. He will be taken to the Fulton County Jail, once released from Grady Hospital.
