Buckhead Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested

An AT&T Store employee slipped a dummy phone box with a GPS tracking device into the loot bag taken by the suspect on Sunday night.

Atlanta police have arrested a man they believe robbed a Buckhead AT&T Store at gunpoint on Sunday, according to a police report.

Just after 7 p.m., a man walked into the store at 4279 Roswell Road NE and pointed a gun at the employee and ordered him to empty the cash register and place Apple iPhones and iPads into a bag. Thinking quickly, the employee put a dummy iPhone box with a GPS tracking device inside it into the bag.

After the suspect left, the worker called 911 and then his manager. The employee told police the man who robbed the store was wearing sunglasses, a bright blue hoodie, a baseball cap with a yellow brim, gray and black Puma shoes and dark gray jeans. The store manager was able to track the dummy phone box and provide its location to officers, the report says.

Around a half hour later, the phone box was tracked to the parking lot of a restaurant in Dunwoody and a plainclothes officer entered the restaurant and observed a person matching the description of the suspect. When the man matching the description of the suspect left the restaurant, he was stopped by police before he could drive away in a black GMC Yukon. The man was found to be carrying a Glock pistol, a black bandanna, and approximately $318.

Police discovered the phone box and the other stolen electronics in the back seat of a gray Ford Edge parked near the Yukon. Next to the bag of 27 stolen electronics was a baseball cap with a yellow brim and a bright blue hoodie matching the description of the suspect’s clothing. The employee arrived at the scene an hour later and ID’ed the man as the robbery suspect and confirmed the bag of stolen electronics came from the store.
