Car-Tracking Technology Quickly Foils Buckhead Carjacking

Woman's car stolen from Buckhead mall is found on city's west side, according to TV station.

BUCKHEAD, GA -- Thanks to tracking technology in a grandmother's sedan, an alleged carjacking came to a quick end, Patch has learned.

The woman's husband told local media that a thief outside Lenox Square mall demanded she hand over the keys to her car or her life was in danger.

“He said, give me your car keys,” Jack Severence, told WAGA-TV. “He said if you do not give them to me I will shoot you.”

Once the perpetrator took off, Atlanta police were notified and were able to shut the vehicle down in its tracks with Blue Link, a subscription-based service provided in new Hyundai vehicles.

"Blue Link is Hyundai's innovative telematics solution that combines safety, service and infotainment into a complete package. It works to both help simplify Hyundai owners' lives and reduce distractions," the Blue Link website says.

Sgt. Warren Pickard with the Atlanta Police Department told the TV station that the car, a Hyundai Genesis, was quickly found by officers on the west side of town.

“Once officers got eyeballs on the car they radioed to Blue Link through landline to shut the vehicle down,” Pickard was quoted as saying. “They shut the vehicle down completely down to where it would not roll another inch. At that point the bad guy figured something was up and jumped out, but he was immediately captured.”
