π° Here are the top stories in Buckhead today:
- On Monday, a few minutes before 9 p.m., the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD) arrived at a three-story townhome on the 300 block of Lakemoore Drive Northeast. Firefighters had received βreports of a structure fire with entrapment.β Sadly, they found an βelderly female victim, deceased, on the main level of the residence,β as well as the body of a cat. βOne firefighter was transported to Grady with a non-life-threatening finger injury. The cause of the fire is under investigation.β Talking to the media, witnesses describe the victim as a βsweet elderly woman in her 90sβ and the scene as βan inferno coming out the windows.β Thereβs the rumor that βsupposedly it was a kitchen fire, and it just blew from there and went up the stairwell to the top floor,β but authorities aren't confirming this information. (AFRD, Yahoo!)
- The suspect in the murder of the 77-year-old victim at the Paces West Terrace community was supposed to come to court on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. to βfind out if heβll be granted bond.β Instead, we learned that the hearing was canceled, so the suspect could receive βa psychiatric evaluation instead.β Thereβs no word if the hearing was (or will be) rescheduled. (Fox, 11 Alive)
- Who killed the 24-year-old Fulton County sheriffβs deputy who was shot on December 29 at Bolton Road? News was released on Tuesday that a 26-year-old man was arrested as a suspect in the crime and βcharged on suspicion of felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.β Allegedly, the killing was the escalation of an argument. Investigators were able to use βdashcam footage from truck drivers and the City's Connect Atlanta camera networkβ to narrow down their search and identify the suspect. (Patch)
- Are you up for some local paddling? The Georgia River Network (GRN) announced its paddle-a-thon competition. The goal is to βconnect more people to Georgia's rivers and raise funds & awareness for Georgia River Network's conservation and recreation projects.β You have until September 6 to compete for the spot of top paddler. Prizes will be handed out for various categories, including $250 for the βweirdest piece of trash removed from waterways.β (Mighty Cause)
