FBI to Conduct Terrorist Attack Simulation in Buckhead

Training exercise to take place Sunday at Lenox Square Mall.

The Atlanta field office of the FBI will host a training exercise to simulate a complex terrorist attack in a public venue.

The exercise will take place on Sunday, May 4, 2014, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Lenox Square Mall located at 3393 Peachtree Road.

The FBI and DHS will partner with Atlanta P.D. and representatives from state and local law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services (EMS), and the private sector to execute the final phase of the Complex Mall Attack initiative which was developed to promote preparedness.Β

In 2013, all FBI field offices hosted facilitated discussions with public safety and private sector partners that focused on preparedness, response and recovery efforts necessary to effectively address a complex attack. The FBI is committed to strengthening public safety and private sector partnerships necessary to protect the United States and its citizens.Β 

Every effort has been made to schedule this exercise so as not to interfere with normal mall operations. The public may see law enforcement activity at the Lenox Square Mall on Sunday, May 4, 2014, beginning at 5 p.m., and is asked to avoid those areas of the mall property during this time.Β Β

Britt Johnson, Special Agent in Charge, FBI Atlanta Field Office, stated: β€œThis exercise will emphasize the importance of readiness and partnerships among the law enforcement and first responder community as we respond to a simulated threat involving mass casualties. We would like to thank those participating and observing law enforcement agencies, our private sector partners, and the public for their efforts and patience during this event.”

Participating agencies include: FBI Atlanta, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Atlanta Police Department, Atlanta Fire/Rescue, Atlanta Fulton Emergency Management Agency, Georgia Emergency Management Agency, Grady Hospital Emergency Medical Services, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and MARTA Police Department. Also providing assistance are Lenox Square Mall and Phipps Plaza Management and Security Staff.
