The brand-new Buckhead-area facility is approximately 53,000 sq. ft. and cost $15 million to build, according to a report.

BUCKHEAD, GA -- Families of children undergoing long-term hospital care in Atlanta have a new place to call home away from home.

A brand-new, $15 million Ronald McDonald House on Peachtree-Dunwoody Road opened to the community on Monday, BuckheadView reports. The 53,000 sq. ft. facility has 31 bedrooms for families of young patients at Scottish Rite hospital.

The facility replaces the original house, which was built in 1994 and had 11 bedrooms, according to BuckheadView.

FOX 5 Atlanta reports that the family of Scottish Rite patient Ty West has become the first tenants of the new home. Ty’s father told reporters that the house helps Ty forget his pain.

Although the home is now open and accepting families, there are still shortages of some goods. Officials have put together a wish list of items they need to fully stock the house for future families, such as laundry baskets, gas cards, portable DVD players, and toys for the younger patients.
