Northside Drive Water Line, Road Work to Begin this Summer

Significant traffic delays are expected on the already busy corridor.

Patch Staff Report

The Georgia Department of Transportation, in conjunction with the City of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management, has awarded a $23.8 million contract for the installation of new water lines as well as a reconfiguration of lanes and the installation of sidewalks on Northside Drive in Buckhead.

For approximately 2.4 miles along Northside Drive from Interstate Highway 75 to its intersection with Northside Parkway, the existing water line will be replaced with a new 36 inch main line. New customer distribution lines also are to be added.Β

Coinciding with this work, the existing center reversible lane from I-75 to Collier Road will be converted to a two-way left turn lane. The lane configuration north of Collier to Northside Parkway also will consist of two travel lanes and a two-way left turn lane.Β

A new turn lane from Northside onto Collier, signal upgrades, sidewalks and other improvements also are included in the contract awarded to Astra Group, Inc., of Woodstock. While the City and Georgia DOT are collaborating on the project and sharing the cost, the latter will manage the contract.Β

Work is expected to begin this summer and is scheduled for completion by March, 2017.

Detailed lane closure and work schedule information will be made public before construction begins but it is anticipated that work will occur during weekday daytime hours to accommodate the primarily residential nature of the community.Β

As that likely will entail reducing Northside to one lane in each direction during work hours, significant traffic delays may occur on this already busy corridor.Β  Those who frequently travel Northside in this work zone area are therefore encouraged to determine detour routes before the construction begins and avoid the area as much as possible during project work days.Β Β
