She was a former Junior League of Atlanta vice president and enacted organizational changes which are still in effect today. She also established several grassroots organizations, such as:

  • "R.I.O.T. (Rollback Increase of Taxes) was successful in collecting over 15,000 signatures to protest the county’s high tax rate.
  • SPACE is an urban land trust which, in conjunction with the Trust for Public Land, successfully saved land from overdevelopment inside the I-285 corridor.
  • CLEAN.  In direct response to community concern over our aging sewer system, Mary established CLEAN, a coalition of homeowners and engineers who designed and monitored the construction of the Nancy Creek Sewer Tunnel.  This extraordinary collaboration dramatically improved water quality in the Nancy Creek Watershed."

Mary Norwood is married to Dr. Felton Norwood, a retired pediatrician.  She is stepmother to Palmer Norwood of Chattanooga, TN, and Dr. Dorsey Norwood, a pediatrician working in East Point.
