Officer Injured Breaking Suspect's Window in Buckhead

Law enforcement was responding to a call about a suspected stolen vehicle on Cheshire Bridge Road.

BUCKHEAD, GA -- An Atlanta police officer responding to a call about a suspected stolen vehicle was injured Wednesday morning while trying to detain a suspect, according to news reports.

When the officer pulled up about 2 a.m. to the Cheshire Motor Inn on Cheshire Bridge Road in Buckhead, he saw a civilian behind the wheel of an SUV blocking what he believed was a stolen Nissan Altima.

The driver inside the Altima began ramming the SUV, damaging an adjacent car in the process.

The officer tried to get the man to roll down his window, but he refused, prompting the officer to smash the window, according to WAGA-TV. The officer suffered an injury -- possibly a broken hand -- in the process, according to reports.

Police identified the driver as Dwight Beckett. Law enforcement alleges that he tried to hit an officer with his vehicle and wrecked several others vehicles while trying to flee the parking lot.

The officer, who was not identified, was taken to the hospital, WAGA reports.
Beckett is facing aggravated assault charges, according to WGCL.
