π° Here are the top stories in Buckhead today:
- The 23-year-old suspect in the December murder of Eleanor Bowles was indicted on Tuesday. If you recall, she may have interrupted the suspect while he was attempting to steal her car, which then led to her killing. The suspect was charged βon suspicion of murder, aggravated battery, possession of a knife during the commission of a felony, elder abuse and hijacking a motor vehicle.β (Patch)
- On Tuesday, Mayor Andre Dickens established a task force. What will it do? Itβs supposed to βfurther engage the community on plans for the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center site as well as the surrounding green space, including the former Atlanta Prison Farm.β Known as the βSouth River Forest and Public Safety Training Center Community Task Force,β it will have around 40 members appointed by the mayor in March. By July, he expects a first set of recommendations. (City of Atlanta)
- Sixty-six (out of around 180) Spelman College faculty members condemned the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. They pointed to the building site as being a former βslave labor camp,β and said that the βviolent histories of settler colonialism and slavery abound in this project.β Faculty members say construction of the facility would βcontribute to militarization, deforestation and gentrificationβ that will harm the Black community. Previously, 50 (of around 137) members of Morehouse Collegeβs faculty demanded an end to the project. (Moguldom)
- Is βdevelopment pressureβ bearing down on Pershing Point Park? Mondayβs report highlights the proactive call of the Atlanta Preservation Center to give the park landmark status. If you think it's a case of crying wolf, consider that a large apartment building is going up just across the street at 1441 Peachtree, and remember the cityβs history of tearing down spaces wholesale to make room for projects that may or may not come to fruition. (Saporta Report)
- The Atlanta Jewish Foundation is hosting its βGrow A Legacyβ event on March 2 at the Congregation Bβnai Torah at 700 Mount Vernon Highway Northeast. A festive reception will celebrate the βJewish Communityβs dedication to grow and sustain a vibrant Jewish Future.β (Atlanta Jewish Foundation)
