In his lecture, "World War II: The Ascent of American Character," he will discuss America's role in the war, particularly in the final liberation of Europe, and how the United States grew from a puny combat force with fewer than 200,000 soldiers to a stupendous military and economic powerhouse of more than 16 million in uniform.
Rick Atkinson recently completed The Guns at Last Light: The War in Europe, 1944-1945, the final volume of his Liberation Trilogy, a narrative history of the U.S. militaryβs role in the liberation of Europe in World War II.
